🌍 Geography – The 3 I’s
Intent
At Littlebourne Church of England Primary School, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the world and develop pupils’ understanding of both physical and human geography. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, vocabulary and skills needed to explore places, environments and societies — locally, nationally and globally.
Through progressive learning from Reception to Year 6, pupils investigate where places are, what they are like, how they change over time and how people interact with and impact the world around them. Our curriculum also promotes environmental responsibility, sustainability and global citizenship, helping children understand their role in shaping the future of our planet.
Implementation
Geography is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and skills year on year. Learning begins in the Early Years with an understanding of place, the local environment and the wider world, before developing into more complex concepts such as climate, settlements, trade, sustainability, ecosystems, urbanisation and global interdependence in Key Stages 1 and 2.
Pupils use a wide range of resources including atlases, globes, maps, digital mapping tools and fieldwork to deepen understanding. Each unit develops geographical vocabulary, locational knowledge, enquiry skills and critical thinking. Opportunities for comparison, investigation, discussion and real-world application are embedded across all year groups, with strong links to current global issues such as climate change, deforestation, sustainability and biodiversity.
Impact
By the time pupils leave Littlebourne, they are confident geographers who can explain where places are, describe their features, compare environments and understand how human actions affect the planet. Children demonstrate strong geographical vocabulary, accurate use of maps and an ability to think critically about environmental challenges. They develop a sense of responsibility for the world they live in and an appreciation of different cultures, places and ways of life. Our curriculum ensures pupils are well-prepared for future learning and equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to become informed, responsible global citizens.
