Intent

At Littlebourne we nurture the natural curiosity that children have about the world.  We provide a progressive learning journey that develops children’s knowledge and builds vocabulary.  Through an inclusive, creative curriculum we provide opportunities for all learners to develop important scientific skills that can be applied across the curriculum and will create active learners who thrive and achieve within school and beyond.

Implementation

Through carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, we ensure that there is appropriate coverage of science, working alongside and complementing other areas of the curriculum.  We have a question-based approach for each lesson, encouraging children to develop and build on previous learning to grow as learners as they advance through the school.  Scientific skills are displayed and promoted in other curriculum subjects to maximise awareness and application of these.

We use interesting stimuli and a variety of teaching approaches to encourage and include learners of all abilities, with flexible classroom management styles and ways of recording learning.  We use knowledge organisers to promote key questions, highlight relevance of topics for our learners, and develop vocabulary.  These also demonstrate the progression of skills from one year to the next.

Impact

Our children will be able to:

  • Have acquired knowledge from all scientific areas of study included in the primary curriculum and can make links between these.
  • Recognise important scientific skills and be able to identify how they have personally developed and applied those skills.
  • Use language that is specific to science when exploring scientific concepts and questions.
