Happy New Year! Welcome back.

Winter Poetry
As part of our English unit on poetry, we have been reading some wintery poems and talking about some of our favourite words and phrases and how they make us feel. We went on a freezing-cold wintry walk to collect words and phrases about how we felt, things we noticed, heard, smelt and tasted and any actions we saw or took. We then collected and sorted nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs to support our poetry writing. We will be using Kit Wright's 'The Magic Box' poem to write our own poem labelled 'The Magic Winter Box'.

Multiplication and Division
We have started our new maths unit with some multiplication, understanding that multiplication means equal groups. We started with looking at counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, sorting equal and unequal groups, making arrays and problem-solving. We will be moving onto looking at knowing the 2, 5 and 10 times tables by heart along with the inverse operation of division. We will then be moving onto the 3, 4 and 5 times tables (Year 3) and the inverse.
Here is a website with some great games the children have enjoyed playing to support their learning.

Topic
Our new History topic is 'The Egyptians', where we will be exploring the ancient Civilisation, the people who lived in it and the importance of the Pharaoh, Hatshepsut. If you have any books or artifacts about Ancient Egypt at home, please feel free to bring them in for us to have a look at.
Term 2
Welcome back to the busiest term of the year – and it's a long one!

Victorian Day
The year is 1880 and children living in the Victorian era had to put down their chimney brushes, crawl out of their coal mines and head to the classroom after an Education Act made it the law for all children aged 5-10 to attend school.
Eagles Class spent the day learning all about what a typical school day was like for a Victorian Child. They worked in cold and dark conditions, learning letters, numbers and poetry by rote and copying on slates in chalk. Children who disobeyed the rules were given the cane as punishment, and children not working hard enough or making mistakes were made to stand in the corner and wear the dunce hat. The girls sat at the back to learn skills for when they become mothers, and the boys were at the front learning the 3 R's: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic along with History, Geography and woodwork. The children participated in drills outside in line for Physical Education. In the afternoon, the children learnt all about the toys Victorian children played with, and the girls made peg dolls and the boys made a cup and ball toy.

English
This term, we will be looking at the narrative 'Little Red Reading Hood' - the traditional tale with a twist. The children will be experiencing a woodland walk and different libraries to support them in their writing. They will be writing their own versions of the story including story language, alliteration, onomatopoeia, dialogue and personification.

The children have loved the story so much, we had to read the others by Lucy Rowland. Check them out!

Topic
Our Geography topic this term is all about Canterbury. After learning about human and physical features in and around Canterbury, we took a trip to the Historic City to find out why so many people visit every year from all over the world! We included a visit to Canterbury Cathedral, The River Stour and Westgate gardens, Westgate Towers, The Roman Museum (making links to our Roman Topic from last year) and The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge. We even took a trip into the library for a quick story (making links with our English unit).
